This COSHH – Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Course will teach participants how to handle, store, and control hazardous substances correctly. Many people work with hazardous chemicals and substances without really giving it a second thought. But employees working in such diverse places such as farms or swimming pools do come into contact with harmful materials and should know how to work safely with them. COSHH drives that learning and knowledge.

This COSHH Course will inform the learner of the risks involved in exposure to everyday chemicals, and how to keep themselves and those around them safe. The training modules are designed to present all the regulations present in this 2002 act and ensure that the full knowledge is given to safely deal with potentially hazardous environments.

By the end of the COSHH Course, you will know the full principles and contents of the COSHH act, and how it may apply to your workplace. As well as identifying the regulations, you will know the significance of COSHH symbols and how to act with them. You will also be able to perform risk assessments and mitigations in your workplace.

Course Curriculum

This course starts off with a bang, by explaining what COSHH is, and what it does and does not cover. You’ll even discover what the COSHH symbols are and why they are important for identifying hazardous substances. This is the module which looks at the different categories of hazardous substances that can be found in the workplace. It also focuses on where these substances can be found and what effects they can cause on human health.

Module two begins to bring our awareness to the finer details of the COSHH legislation and also introduces the learner into other legislation which influences or supports COSHH. This information includes details of COSHH ‘guidance notes’ and ‘Approved Code of Practice,’ which is the basic outline describing what an employer needs to do to comply with COSHH.

This is where we take a closer look at the short term, midterm and long term implications of the effects of hazardous substances, and how exactly, they can cause harm. We also show the learner what implications acute and chronic exposure brings and who is at risk.

This module really helps the learner to understand what substances can cause asthma, fire, dangerous environments and more. It also brings more detail and information on warning labels and introduces the learner into chemical safety data sheets.

Module 5 is very focused on an important aspect of COSHH – the assessment processes. In this module, the learner will understand what COSHH assessments are and why they are necessary.

They’ll also learn step by step why each aspect of the assessment process is important and what considerations need to be made to complete the assessment adequately.

As you will discover in module 6, control measures are sophisticated and require a lot of thought and continual monitoring and management of them. If a control measure fails, then the health of the employees is at risk. It’s a big deal.

This is the last module in the COSHH training course, and it’s sort of like the icing on the top of the cake. It teaches the learner how to select, implement and maintain control measures. It also explains in more detail how to plan for emergencies and the reasons why health surveillance implementation might be something that employers may need to consider.
